Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnosis

Hypnosis can be a new and exciting experience, shrouded in mistique and mistery. For many people, their first exposure to hypnosis is stage hypnosis which adds to the interest but also creates misconceptions.

Here are some of the common questions we get asked by clients when they are first looking into hypnosis.

How Many Hypnosis Sessions Do I Need?

It is virtually impossible to estimate how many hypnosis sessions you will need, especially before conducting a single session.

We’ve written an entire article to give you a better understanding of this process and how many sessions you might need.

Factors to keep in mind include:

  • How deeply ingrained your issue is – has it been going on for years? Does it manifest in multiple areas of your life or in a very specific area?
  • How much support you feel you need – are you the type who takes an idea and runs with it on your own, or do you feel like you need support and encouragement throughout your process?

Can I be Hypnotized?

The general answer is, yes!

Hypnosis is actually a state we enter automatically throughout the day – whether you’re driving down a long stretch of highway, waking up, or falling asleep, you might find yourself feeling like you’ve “zoned out” or aren’t sure how much time has passed.

Hypnosis for therapuetic purposes is simply a process of deliberately entering this state for the purpose of finding insight and change. It’s a simple as spending a few minutes relaxing your body – you can experience it here right now.

Does Online Hypnosis Work?

Yes! Hypnosis can work online remarkably well. Since hypnosis is achieved with the help of the guided instructions of the hypnotist, all you need is a good audio connection.

Hypnosis can even be done on the phone – the reason we use video even though your eyes are closed for most of it is because it helps us guage where you are at based on changes to your body and phisiology without you needing to verbally tell us.

There are a few benefits to online hypnosis as well – you can connect with the hypnotist who feels like a good fit for you, or specailizes in your issue, regardless of where you live; and you can save commute time while staying as comfortable as possible: many clients like to have their session in bed!

There are a few things that can help maximize the effectivness of your online hypnosis session: a good internet connection and good pair of headphones, a place where you can relax comfortably without getting interrputed, and a way to have a camera pointing at your face without you holding it up. (A plugged-in laptop typically works better than a phone, for example)

Can hypnosis help with my specific problem?

Generally, hypnosis is a modality, and can be used to help overcome a wide range of issues. It works by accessing the subconscious more directly, and introducing newer, more beneficial ways of thinking, feeling, and acting to the decision-making parts of your mind.

People often use hypnosis to help with feelings of anxiousness, feeling down or sad, feeling stuck in one or more areas of life, overcoming procrastination, increasing confidence, getting clarity around life and career, and enhancing sexual and romantic relationships.

Hypnosis is not recommended for people with eating disorders, psychosis, and uncontrollable panic attacks.

We find hypnosis complements conventional therapy very well, and can be used to enhance any growth or relief you are getting from your therapist or medication.

Is hypnosis mind control?

This is a very common question people have, and it’s very valid, as often the first exposure people have to hypnosis is through stage hypnosis, where they witness people doing all sorts of crazy things on command.

In reality, even those people on stage are actually in control – hypnosis is a process that helps reduce inhibitions, and in the case of stage hypnosis, the hypnotist will select from the crowd the people who are most interested in being on stage and the most responsive to his suggestions. This results in a very entertaining experience, but it’s rooted in the person being given permission to deeply drop into their role and act it out as authentically as possible – think of it as a form of method acting.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.
